DETROIT, MI - Two goals in the second period and three more in the third, including a pair of power play markers were the difference as the New Jersey Devils defeated the Detroit Red Wings 5-1 at Little Caesars Arena on Wednesday night.

Dougie Hamilton , Jack Hughes , Nico Hischier and Alexander Holtz each had a goal and an assist while Miles Wood had a pair of helpers in the victory.

The game had both Hischier and Tomas Tatar stepping up big for the team despite playing with an injury.

"We knew some guys were going to try and tough it out for us," said Devils head coach Lindy Ruff. "Couple guys were game-time decisions and were able to play. We didn't get their bodies to 100% but I thought the effort was great. The fact they wanted to play, we got through the game."

The first penalty of the game didn't come until 6:58 into the second period. Jonas Siegentahler ran interference on Dominik Kubalik to put the Red Wings on the power play.

Devils were able to kill it off and shortly after, had a power play of their own with Ben Chiarot in the box. Five seconds into that man advantage, they scored to make it 1-0. Nico Hischier won the draw over to Jack Hughes who fed Dougie Hamilton at the point. Hamilton made no mistake, ripping it from the top of the circle past Red Wings starting goaltender Ville Husso. It was the first face-off that Hischier took in the game, coming nearly midway through.

"We knew that he wasn't going to be able to take a lot (of face-offs) but we still thought he could step in for the odd one. It was a tight game until we scored those couple of power play goals and both of them where at the hands of winning draws," Ruff added.

Late in the middle frame, the Devils got another power play and connected again. Jake Walman was in the box for tripping and 40 seconds into the New Jersey man advantage, Hischier tipped a point shot from Hamilton past Husso to double the Devils' lead.

After one period, shots on goal were 9-6 for the Red Wings and after two they were 21-16 for the home team.

Less than two minutes into the final frame, the Devils struck again as Miles Wood's shot from the side of the net put Ville Husso out of position. Alexander Holtz then got the puck over to Michael McLeod who put it into the open cage for a 3-0 Devils lead.

On the next shift, Vitek Vanecek made two huge stops on Michael Rasmussen on a breakaway. Rasmussen rapped his stick against the boards in frustration afterwards.

Walman was called for tripping 4:38 into the third. It was the first power play that the Devils did not score on but two seconds after it expired, Holtz ripped a shot from the high slot glove side past Husso to put the Devils in front 4-0.

Jack Hughes scored with 6:01 to go in the third, stickhandling swiftly before banking the puck off Husso.

Red Wings added one with two minutes to go.

The Devils return home to play the St. Louis Blues on Thursday. Puck drop is 7:08 p.m. ET and the game can be seen on MSGSN or heard on the Devils Hockey Network.

Here are some observations from the game...

It was Robby Fabbri's first game of the season after tearing his ACL back in September.

Devils had a great chance midway through the first period with the puck laying in the Detroit crease in front of a bunch of skaters and goaltender Ville Husso. Nico Hischier tried to get a stick on the loose puck but it was cleared out of harm's way before he could.

Hischier's hand injury was troubling him and resulted in him not taking any draws in the first half of the game. The first two face-offs for his line were taken by Tomas Tatar , who went 0-2. Dawson Mercer then swapped onto that line with Tatar to take face-offs. Tatar moved over with Jack Hughes and Erik Haula .

Hischier's first face-off of the game came with the Devils on the power play and it was a huge one. He won the draw over to Jack Hughes who fed Dougie Hamilton for his goal to make it a 1-0 game. He only took six draws on the night, but won four.

"I felt good enough to be out there but definitely tried not to take too many face-offs, stuff like that," said Hischier. "Just trying to help the team on the wing as well, I think it was my first game as a winger," he chuckled.

"In my mind, I just wanted to reduce the face-offs. On the power play unit I'm going to grind it out there and take those draws and it came up good. Lucky it was good enough to win some draws for the team there. Overall, just happy for the game and the two points tonight."

Damon Severson had 10:26 of ice time in the first period to lead all skaters by far. He finished with 23:30

Michael McLeod had a really strong game, the 200th of his NHL career. In addition to his goal, he was 52% in the face-off dot. The draw performance was strongly needed by the Devils, who as a team were only 39% on face-offs.

"Same as usual, just a little more face-offs and more defensive zone starts," said McLeod. "Everyone kind of played well defensively and we tried to minimize their chances and get on the offense.

McLeod also talked about helping with the secondary scoring.

"It's great to chip in and see the other guys chip in like that. Everyone's working on their offense in practice so it's good to have a game like that."

McLeod added that he knew it was his 200th career game.

"Pretty happy about it," he said. "It's awesome. I just want to keep going and keep getting better. I love this organization. It's been awesome."

It was the fourth straight game where Hischier scored a goal.

"I just try to help wherever I can for the team," he said, modestly. "Scoring goals is a good thing, too. It gives myself some confidence but on the other hand, got the two points."
